Play does not replace your agency: it replaces the model where you keep nothing

Creative work is worth hiring. What should not be hired over and over is the system: where the footage is, who approved what, and what it really cost.

The platform is included at no cost with every PLAY production service.

The short version: Play against the agency model

An agency brings creative judgement, a team that is already assembled, and accountability for the result. Play produces too, through PLAY /Services, so this is not platform against service. The difference is what is left when the project ends: in the traditional model the piece is delivered and the system stays with the agency, whereas with Play the piece, the raw footage, the approvals and the real cost stay in your workspace — whether you produce with us, with your long-standing agency, or with your in-house team.

An agency is better if…

What you need is a big idea, a campaign with many pieces around one concept, or an ongoing strategic relationship that goes well beyond video: media, brand, activation.

Play is better if…

Your problem is not the idea, it is the volume: constant content, across several markets, with a budget that has to be justified and an archive currently spread across three suppliers.

What you walk away with under each model

The comparison is not about creative quality — there is no generalising about that. It is about what infrastructure you are left with after the invoice is paid.

What the agency model is and what Play is

What an agency is

An agency sells judgement and execution: it understands your brand, proposes the idea and carries it out with its own team or with suppliers it coordinates. It is hired per project or on a recurring fee, and its value lies in what it knows how to do and in the relationship. Its unit of work is the commission, and when the commission ends, the infrastructure that made it possible stays on the agency's side.

What Play is

Play is a Production-Tech company, and it has both halves. Play Platform is the software where all content is planned, approved and stored, with a free plan. PLAY /Services is the creative, production and post-production team that shoots, with more than 1,200 professionals across more than 20 countries. You can use only the platform, commission one-off production, or both with a single point of contact.

Why this comparison is not about replacing anyone

Many brands use Play as their platform and carry on working with their agency, which joins the workspace as an external collaborator at no licence cost. The agency gains a place where the client can see the real status and stops asking for updates by email, and the brand gains continuity between projects. What Play replaces is not the agency: it is the gap left when every project starts from zero.

The four differences you notice most

They all answer the same question: what are you left with when the project ends?

Every project starts from zero, and it should not

Request three quotes, wait, compare different formats, negotiate, sign. That cycle repeats identically for a campaign spot and for three product verticals, and most of the internal team's time goes on managing the production rather than deciding what to say.

One point of contact and a transparent rate card based on real costs.

The footage stays scattered across suppliers

The masters stay with the production company, versions travel by WeTransfer, and nobody can find the cut from eight months ago. Something that already existed gets shot again. With Play, the finished piece and the rushes stay in your library, tagged, whoever you produce with.

An archive that grows with each project instead of scattering.

There is no clean way to compare what each piece costs

The annual budget is spent through separate invoices from different suppliers, each in its own format. Knowing the average cost per video means rebuilding it by hand. Play keeps the budget, the expenses and the purchase orders inside the same project where the video is approved.

Real cost per piece and per campaign, comparable across projects.

You can start without commissioning anything

Under the traditional model, trying it means hiring. Play's LITE plan is free and lets you organise what you are already producing with your current team and suppliers. If you need production later, it is in the same environment, but it is not a requirement.

You test it on a real project before moving a euro of budget.

When to work with an agency and when to work with Play

They are not mutually exclusive, and plenty of brands do both. These are the cases where each model fits better.

Work with an agency if

  • You need a big idea that orders a whole year of communication.
  • You are looking for a strategic relationship that goes beyond video.
  • The project is one-off, highly conceptual and will not be repeated.
  • You want someone who knows your brand from the inside and will argue with the brief.
  • Volume is low and does not justify building a system.

Work with Play if

  • You produce content regularly and the calendar rules.
  • You need to justify the budget with a real cost per piece.
  • You want the footage to stay in your house, not a supplier's.
  • You produce across several markets and do not want a local agency per country.
  • You want to be able to start yourself, free, before commissioning anything.

What Play costs against an agency

These are two different costs and it is worth not mixing them. The platform is paid per workspace. Production is quoted per project, as at an agency, but with a transparent rate card.

If you produce with us, the platform costs you nothing

Access to Play Platform is included at no cost with every PLAY video production service. You can come in through the platform door and pay only for the software, or come in through the production door and take the software with it.

To be straight about it: an agency you have worked with for years knows your brand in a way no tool replaces, and for a concept campaign that is worth its price. Play stops being comparable when the work is sustained volume, because there what weighs is not the idea behind each piece but the system that produces all of them. See PLAY's production services.

How to start without falling out with anyone

The usual route is to open Play as a platform and carry on producing exactly as before. The decision about who shoots comes later, or never.

  1. Open a LITE workspace and try it at no cost

The LITE plan is free, allows 3 internal users, unlimited external collaborators and 250 GB. Enough to run a real project, not a demo.

  2. Invite your agency as a collaborator

They join without taking a licence and work inside the workspace. For them it is a place to show progress without email chains; for you, a place to see the real status without asking.

  3. Get the footage back from projects in flight

Ask for the rushes and masters of what is under way and upload them to your library. This is the step that makes the archive start accumulating instead of scattering.

  4. Switch on budgets and cost control

From then on each piece carries its cost inside the project, and at the end of the quarter the average cost per video comes out on its own.

  5. Decide, with data, what you produce and with whom

With a couple of projects inside you can compare. Some brands stay with their agency, others hand the whole production to us, and many mix depending on the project.

Frequently asked questions about Play against an agency

Does Play replace my agency?

Only if you want it to. Many brands use Play as their platform and carry on working with their agency, which joins the workspace as an external collaborator at no licence cost. Others hand the whole production to PLAY /Services. And others mix the two depending on the project.

Is Play an agency?

Not exactly. Play is a Production-Tech company: it has a software platform and a production team. What it does not do is run your brand in the broad sense, or media, or communications strategy. If you need that, an agency will do it better.

Can I use Play without hiring production?

Yes. The LITE plan is free and gives you briefs, tasks, calendar, media library, videofeedback and unlimited external collaborators. You can use it with your in-house team, your agency or your usual suppliers, without commissioning a single piece from us.

Who owns the material that gets produced?

The material is stored in your workspace library, rushes included, tagged and ready to reuse. It is one of the biggest practical differences from the project-by-project model, where the rushes usually stay with the production company.

What does Play cost against an agency?

They are two separate costs. The platform: LITE free, PRO 149 € per workspace per month with 5 users included, Enterprise custom. Production is quoted per project on a transparent rate card based on real costs, so you know the figure before starting. If you produce with PLAY, the platform is included at no cost.

Can my agency work inside Play?

Yes, and it is the recommended setup. External collaborators are unlimited on every plan, the free one included, so the agency joins the workspace without changing your invoice and without a cap on people.

Can you produce in several countries?

Yes. PLAY /Services activates local crews in more than 20 countries from a network of more than 1,200 vetted professionals, keeping editorial control and brand consistency, with a single Account Manager as your point of contact.

How do I start?

Open a free LITE workspace, invite your agency and your team, upload the footage from projects in flight, and switch on cost control. You do not have to change supplier to start feeling the difference.
