Play is not a DAM: it is where the material a DAM archives gets made

An asset manager tidies what you have already produced. Play tidies how you produce it: brief, tasks, budget, review and library in one place.

LITE plan free forever, with 250 GB and unlimited external collaborators.

The short version: Play against a DAM

A DAM (Digital Asset Management) is a clever warehouse: it centralises finished files, tags them, controls permissions and makes it easy for the organisation to reuse them. Play includes that library, with AI tagging and public links, and adds everything that happens before the file exists: briefing, tasks, calendar, budget, cost control and talent management. The practical difference: a DAM tells you where the video is, Play tells you what it cost, who approved it and what is missing for the next one.

A DAM is better if…

Your problem is the archive, not the production: you have tens of thousands of assets of many kinds, a lot of people consuming them, and you need brand governance, fine-grained permissions and distribution to channels.

Play is better if…

Your problem is that producing takes too long and you cannot say what each piece costs. The archive is the consequence, not the cause.

What each one covers, from brief to publication

The two tools agree on the library. They part company on everything that happens before the first file, and on everything to do with money and teams.

What a DAM is and what Play is

What a DAM is

A Digital Asset Management system is where an organisation stores, classifies and distributes its digital files: images, videos, logos, brand documents. Its value is in search, in metadata, in permissions, and in stopping every team from keeping its own copy. It was built for marketing and communications in large companies, and its unit of work is the finished file.

What Play is

Play is a Production-Tech company. It combines three pieces in one flow: Play Platform, the software where production is planned, managed, approved and optimised; PLAY /Services, the creative, production and post-production team that makes the content; and KAMI AI, the assistant that structures briefs, organises projects and tags footage. Its unit of work is the project, not the file.

Why they are not the same category

A DAM only stores. A project tracker only organises tasks. Review software only covers one stage. And a traditional production service hands you the video but gives you no platform and no control. Play is the only option that puts platform, services and AI in a single flow, from brief to publication. That is why they sit together well: a DAM can stay the corporate archive while Play is where the things that end up in it get made.

The four differences you notice most

They all start from the same point: a DAM begins once the file exists. Production begins a long way before that.

A DAM archives the result. Play runs the process

In a DAM you upload what is already finished. The brief, the budget, the shoot calendar and who does what all live somewhere else: in email, in spreadsheets, and in a general-purpose project tracker. In Play a project starts as a structured brief, and the tasks, the calendar and the delivery queues come out of it.

One source of truth about where each piece stands, not only about where it ended up.

A DAM does not know what the things it stores cost

The cost of a piece gets reconstructed afterwards, by adding up invoices from different suppliers. Play keeps the budget, the rate card, the expenses and the purchase orders inside the same project where the video is reviewed, so the real cost sits where the piece sits.

Cost per project and per campaign without rebuilding it by hand at the end of the quarter.

A DAM organises files. Play organises people

Video production is mixed-team work: freelancers, production companies, agencies, the client. In Play external collaborators are unlimited on every plan, the free one included, and only internal users count.

You can bring a whole external crew onto a shoot without the invoice changing.

A DAM gives you software. Play gives you software and hands

When you run short of capacity, a well-ordered archive still leaves the problem with you. Behind Play there is a network of more than 1,200 vetted professionals and an in-house creative, production and post-production team in Barcelona, Madrid and Toronto.

You scale content volume without building an internal team or opening a procurement process.

When to choose a DAM and when to choose Play

A DAM is not a bad tool: it is a tool with a specific scope, and a very good one inside it.

Choose a DAM if

  • Your archive holds tens of thousands of assets of many kinds, not just video.
  • You need brand governance: templates, usage rights, licence expiry.
  • Many people consume material and very few produce it.
  • You need to push automatically to channels, ecommerce or brand portals.
  • The problem you want to solve is finding, not producing.

Choose Play if

  • You produce content regularly and the calendar rules.
  • You need to know what each piece costs, not only where it is.
  • You work with a lot of external collaborators and do not want to pay per seat.
  • You want briefing, approval and delivery in the same place as the footage.
  • You would like to be able to hire production without leaving the platform.

What Play costs against a DAM

Most DAMs on the market do not publish a price: they quote on users, storage and modules. Play publishes its own and charges per workspace.

LITE

0 €

  • Up to 3 internal users
  • Unlimited external collaborators
  • 250 GB of media
  • Production and collaboration modules

PRO

149 €/month /workspace

  • 5 users included, 19 € per extra user
  • Unlimited external collaborators
  • 1 TB of media included
  • Every module: CRM, Cost Control, Analytics

Enterprise

Custom

  • Volume discounts on users and storage
  • SSO, SAML and SLA
  • Account Manager and migration included
  • A flat 10 % off production services from 15 users

Annual billing works out at 10 months. Extra storage at 29 €/TB per month.

To be straight about it: if what you need is a corporate archive with brand governance for thousands of users, a specialised DAM will do it better than Play, and it probably earns its budget. Play stops being comparable when the weight is not on archiving but on producing — that is where it replaces the project tracker, the cost spreadsheet, and a per-seat licence for every external collaborator. See all of Play's plans and add-ons.

How to start without touching your DAM

There is no need to choose. The usual route is to open Play with the next project and leave the DAM as the corporate archive for what is already published.

  1. Open a LITE workspace and try it at no cost

The LITE plan is free, allows 3 internal users, unlimited external collaborators and 250 GB. Enough to run a real project, not a demo.

  2. Start with a project that does not exist yet

Rather than migrating the archive, start the next piece in Play: brief, tasks, budget and review. That is where the difference shows within a week.

  3. Invite the team and the collaborators

External people, whether client, freelancer or production company, come in without taking a licence. This is where most teams feel the change from per-seat pricing.

  4. Decide which archive lives where

The usual split: working footage and versions in Play, and the approved master also in the DAM if your organisation distributes from there.

Frequently asked questions about Play as an alternative to a DAM

Is Play a DAM?

Not exactly. Play includes a media library with automatic AI tagging, permissions and public links, which covers what most content teams use a DAM for. What it does not do is advanced brand governance or automatic distribution to channels, which are home ground for the category.

Can I replace my DAM with Play?

It depends what you use it for. If your DAM is where the content team stores and searches video, yes. If it also governs usage rights, brand templates and distribution to ecommerce or portals, no: in that case they sit together, with Play as the production system and the DAM as the corporate archive.

What does Play do that a DAM does not?

Everything before the file: structured briefing, tasks, calendar, budgets, cost control, purchase orders, talent management and access to production services. A DAM begins once the file exists; Play begins when there is only a need.

What does Play cost against a DAM?

Play has a free LITE plan, a PRO plan at 149 € per workspace per month with 5 users included and 19 € per extra user, and a custom Enterprise plan. Most DAMs on the market do not publish a price and quote on users, storage and the modules you take.

Does Play have metadata search and automatic tagging?

Yes. The Media Library tags video automatically with AI from the PRO plan, and lets you search on those tags. It does not reach the configurable taxonomies of an enterprise DAM.

Can I invite clients and freelancers without paying per user?

Yes. External collaborators are unlimited on LITE, PRO and Enterprise. Only internal users are counted: 3 on LITE, 5 on PRO and custom on Enterprise.

How do I start if I already have a DAM running?

Without migrating anything. Open a free LITE workspace and run your next project in Play from start to finish. Approved material can keep going up to your DAM if your organisation distributes from there.
