Play is not a tracker with proofing bolted on: it is the ClickUp alternative built to produce video

ClickUp approves attachments from its Business plan. Play works with versions of a piece, a shoot budget and a talent network, charging neither per seat nor for AI.

LITE plan free forever. Production AI included, with no separate plan.

Updated: September 2026

The short version: Play vs ClickUp

ClickUp is the most complete of the horizontal project trackers: tasks, docs, whiteboards, goals, time tracking and, from its Business plan, unlimited proofing on attachments. It is a lot of product for the money. Play Platform is vertical: it works with versions of a piece of video, timestamped videofeedback, a media library built for heavy files, a production budget with purchase orders, and a talent network behind it. The practical difference: ClickUp approves files, Play produces video.

ClickUp is better if…

You want one tool for all of the company's work, with docs, whiteboards and goals included, and you need to stretch the software budget as far as it goes.

Play is better if…

Producing video is the job, not a category of tasks: there are large files, versions, client approvals and a shoot budget to justify.

Feature comparison: Play against ClickUp

ClickUp is the general-purpose tracker that comes closest, because it includes proofing. The gap appears in what gets approved, and in what happens to the money.

Play Platform compared with ClickUp. Play's data follows its published plans; ClickUp's data follows its public plan documentation (reviewed: September 2026).

What ClickUp is and what Play is

What ClickUp is

ClickUp is a work management platform that has been absorbing categories: tasks and projects, docs, whiteboards, goals, time tracking, dashboards and file proofing. Its proposition is to replace several tools with one, at a low per-user price for what it offers. Its Business plan includes unlimited proofing, and its AI features are bought as separate plans, also per user per month.

What Play is

Play is a Production-Tech company. It combines three pieces in one flow: Play Platform, the software where production is planned, managed, approved and optimised; PLAY /Services, the creative, production and post-production team that makes the content; and KAMI AI, the assistant that structures briefs, organises projects and tags footage. Play comes out of having run more than 10,000 video projects, so the platform reflects how a production actually works.

Why they are not the same category

A DAM only stores. A project tracker only organises tasks. Review software only covers one stage. And a traditional production service hands you the video but gives you no platform and no control. Play is the only option that puts platform, services and AI in a single flow, from brief to publication. ClickUp comes closest from the second box, because its proofing touches the third, but it still does not enter the money or the crew.

The four differences teams notice most

The first has to be put carefully, because ClickUp does have proofing and it is worth explaining exactly where it stops.

Approving an attachment is not reviewing a cut

ClickUp's proofing lets you mark up and comment on a file, and for a graphic that is enough. An edit is not a file: it is a series of cuts compared against each other, with comments anchored to a specific minute and a history you have to be able to consult three versions later. Play works with that unit, not with the attachment.

Feedback stays stuck to the exact second and to the version, not to a task.

The AI a production needs is sold separately

ClickUp's AI plans are bought on top of the per-user plan, and they are aimed at writing, summarising and automating text. KAMI AI is included in Play and does something else: it structures production briefs, organises the project and tags the footage.

No second per-user line on the invoice just to have AI.

A custom field is not cost control

You can build an expense list in ClickUp, and plenty of people do. It is still a number typed in by hand. Play includes the rate card, the budget, the expenses and the purchase orders inside the project, so the cost comes from what was actually charged and can be compared across pieces.

Real cost per piece and per campaign, without rebuilding it at month end.

ClickUp gives you software. Play gives you software and hands

When capacity runs short, the most complete tool on the market does not shoot anything. Behind Play there is a network of more than 1,200 vetted professionals and an in-house creative, production and post-production team in Barcelona, Madrid and Toronto.

You scale volume without building an internal team or opening a procurement process.

When to choose ClickUp and when to choose Play

ClickUp gives a great deal for its price, and for plenty of teams it is the right choice. These are the cases.

Choose ClickUp if

  • You want one tool for the whole company's work.
  • You value docs, whiteboards and goals inside the same product.
  • The proofing you need is on graphics and light files.
  • The software budget is tight and the per-user price rules.
  • Production cost is handled in accounting and that works fine.

Choose Play if

  • Producing video regularly is the job.
  • You need versions of a piece and feedback anchored to the minute.
  • The files are large and there are many of them.
  • You need a shoot budget and purchase orders, not a field.
  • You work with a lot of external people and do not want a licence per head.

What Play costs against ClickUp

ClickUp is among the cheapest per user on the market. The real comparison arrives once you add the external people and the AI plans.

Monthly cost compared. ClickUp prices as published in dollars per user per month billed annually, not counting the AI plans, which are bought separately; Play prices in euros per workspace. Reviewed: September 2026.

To be straight about it: on per-user licence cost ClickUp is cheaper than Play at almost any size and offers a great many things Play does not have, starting with docs, whiteboards and goals. The comparison changes on two fronts: the external people on a shoot, who over there are licences, and the depth of the video craft, which is where generic proofing falls short. How to migrate from ClickUp to Play

If ClickUp works for the rest of the company, the sensible move is to take out only the video production.

  1. Open a LITE workspace and try it at no cost

The LITE plan is free, allows 3 internal users, unlimited external collaborators and 250 GB. No card.

  2. Take a whole piece through, with its versions

This is the comparison that matters: the same edit approved in ClickUp by proofing and in Play by versions, then seeing where the feedback is a month later.

  3. Upload the heavy material

What in ClickUp lives as a link to another service moves inside the project, tagged and searchable.

  4. Invite the team and the external collaborators

Client, freelancers and production company come in without taking a licence, which is the line that grows fastest in a per-user model.

  5. Switch on budgets, cost and CRM

All three come with PRO at no extra cost, and with no separate AI plan.

Frequently asked questions about Play as a ClickUp alternative

Is Play an alternative to ClickUp?

For video production, yes: Play covers briefing, tasks, calendar and delivery queues, and adds video versions, timestamped videofeedback, a heavy media library and shoot cost control. For managing the whole company's work with docs, whiteboards and goals, no: ClickUp is more complete there.

Does ClickUp have review and approval?

Yes. ClickUp includes unlimited proofing from its Business plan, and for graphics and light files it works well. What it does not have is a version history of a piece of video with feedback anchored to a specific minute of each cut, which is a production's unit of work.

What is the difference between Play and ClickUp?

ClickUp approves files inside a horizontal work tracker. Play produces video: versions, heavy media, a shoot budget with purchase orders, a talent network and production services in the same environment.

What does Play cost against ClickUp?

Play has a free LITE plan, a PRO plan at 149 € per workspace per month with 5 users included and 19 € per extra user, and a custom Enterprise plan. ClickUp charges per user: a free plan with 60 MB of storage, Unlimited at 7 $ and Business at 12 $ per user per month billed annually, and Enterprise on request.

Is ClickUp's AI included?

Not in the plan price. ClickUp sells its AI features as separate plans, from 9 $ per user per month. In Play, KAMI AI is included and works on the production: it structures briefs, organises projects and tags footage.

Do external collaborators take a licence?

Not in Play: they are unlimited on LITE, PRO and Enterprise and only internal users are counted. In ClickUp anyone who needs to work inside takes a paid licence.

Does Play have docs and whiteboards like ClickUp?

No. Play does not include collaborative docs or whiteboards, and if those are part of your day-to-day, ClickUp does it and Play does not.

How do I migrate from ClickUp to Play?

Open a free LITE workspace, take a whole piece with its versions through Play, upload the heavy material, invite the team and the external people, and switch on budgets, cost and CRM. The usual route is to move only the video production and leave the rest of the work where it was.
