Animated video production: in animation there is no fixing it in the edit

When you shoot, you can save a piece in the edit suite. When you animate, every late change costs the same as doing it again. That is why everything gets decided first.

LITE plan free forever. The studio and the freelancers join without taking a licence.

Who this page is for

This page explains when animating beats shooting and how the process works. You animate when what has to be shown does not exist yet, cannot be filmed, or would cost far more to shoot. And the process has one critical difference from a shoot: script, style and storyboard decisions are almost irreversible once the animation starts. Play has two pieces that work separately or together: Play Platform, where those approvals get closed stage by stage; and PLAY /Services, which produces in 2D, 3D and motion. You can start free with the platform alone.

What makes an animated video most expensive

Almost always the same thing: deciding late something that should have been decided early.

The script is approved and then the message changes

On a shoot you can trim in the edit. In animation, changing a line after the storyboard means redoing the shots that illustrated it, and that is starting that part again.

Approval by stage, with script and storyboard closed before animating.

The style gets chosen from somebody else's reference

It is approved by looking at another studio's work, without seeing how it looks with your brand. When the first real frames arrive, it is not what anyone pictured.

Style frames approved on your own content before the piece is produced.

Every piece gets animated from scratch

Characters, icons and transitions get remade on every job because there is no library. The second piece costs almost as much as the first.

Assets and a library kept in your own library, so the next piece starts from something.

Changes arrive by email with no reference

Comments like change the pacing of the second block, without saying at which second. The animator interprets, gets it wrong, and a whole iteration is lost.

Videofeedback anchored to the exact second, by version.

How an animated video gets made with Play

Play is a Production-Tech company: software and a production team in the same house. In animation what saves most is closing each stage properly.

Way 1

Platform only

Your studio or your freelancers animate, and you use Play to approve stage by stage, keep the library and stop losing iterations to ambiguous feedback.

  • Briefs, tasks and a production calendar
  • Media library with AI tagging
  • Videofeedback and approvals by version
  • Unlimited external collaborators

Free on the LITE plan

See Play Platform
Way 2

Production only, as and when you need it

You commission the whole piece, in 2D, 3D or motion, with script, style and storyboard approved before animating.

  • End-to-end production with an Account Manager
  • Creative, shooting and post-production
  • Local talent in whichever market it takes
  • A fixed quote per project

Per project, on a transparent rate card

See PLAY /Services
Way 3

Everything together, one partner

The platform is your animation library and our team produces inside it, reusing what has already been made.

  • Everything in way 1 and way 2
  • Platform included at no cost with the services
  • Cost and status traceable in the same place
  • A flat production discount on the Enterprise plan

Platform included, production per project

Talk to the team

The three ways are doors into the same place, and you can move between them without migrating anything. Most teams start at way 1 or way 2 and end up at way 3 once the content volume grows.

When animating is worth it

And when shooting works out better, which also happens.

Common situations and which technique fits best.

What you get from each part

What stops iterations being lost, which is what makes animation expensive.

Approval by stage

Script, style and storyboard are approved as milestones, with their history. That is what stops a change of message being discovered with the animation already under way.

Feedback anchored to the second

Comments sit on the specific frame, not on a description. The animator stops interpreting.

Asset library

Characters, icons, transitions and templates stored and tagged, so the next piece does not start from a blank page.

Ordered versions

Every iteration is recorded, with the approved one identified, and you can go back without rebuilding anything.

Cost per piece

Budget and spend inside the project, to see how much the second piece drops once there is a library.

Unlimited external collaborators

The studio, the illustrator and the animators join without taking a licence, on every plan including the free one.

Script and storyboard before animating

The stage where correcting is cheap. The more that is settled here, the less everything afterwards costs.

Style frames with your content

The style is approved by seeing how it looks with your brand, not against another project's reference.

2D, 3D and motion

The technique is chosen by what has to be told, not by what the supplier knows how to do.

Hybrid AI production

For scaling variants of the same piece: languages, durations and formats per channel.

Brief to publication in four steps

The flow is the same whether you produce or we do. The only thing that changes is who carries out step 3.

  1. You say what you need

You open the project and describe the need. KAMI AI helps turn it into a structured brief, with formats, markets and dates, so that everyone is working from the same thing.

  2. You settle scope, cost and who does it

This is where you pick a way: your team produces it, your agency does, or PLAY /Services does with local talent. If you commission it from us, you get a fixed quote on a transparent rate card before anything starts.

  3. It gets produced and approved inside the platform

Shoot, edit and versions in the same project. Approvals happen through videofeedback and public links, with no email chains. If PLAY produces, your Account Manager oversees every stage.

  4. It is delivered, and it stays

The finished piece and the raw footage stay in your library, tagged and ready to reuse on the next campaign.

What it costs

The platform is paid per workspace. Animation is quoted per project, and the cost depends above all on the technique and the duration.

If you produce with us, the platform costs you nothing

Access to Play Platform is included at no cost with every PLAY video production service. In other words: you can come in through the platform door and pay only for the software, or come in through the production door and take the software with it.

Annual billing works out at 10 months. Extra storage at 29 €/TB per month. In animation what justifies PRO is the library: tagged assets are what make the second piece cost considerably less than the first, and that only happens if they are stored and findable. See the full plan comparison.

Frequently asked questions about animated video production

When is animating better than shooting?

When what has to be shown does not exist yet, cannot be filmed, or would be more expensive or more complicated to shoot. Also when you want a style of your own repeated across every piece. If you need emotion with real people, or you need it for next week, a shoot usually wins.

What does an animated video cost?

It depends on the technique and the duration. Motion graphics is the most affordable, 2D animation with characters costs more, and 3D is the most expensive to start. It is quoted per project on a transparent rate card, and the second piece costs less if there is a library.

How long does it take?

Longer than an equivalent shoot, and much of the time sits before animating: script, style and storyboard. Compressing those stages is what forces work to be redone later.

Can I change things once it is animated?

You can, but it is expensive: there is no equivalent to correcting in the edit. That is why the script and the storyboard are approved as milestones, with their history, before the animation starts.

What happens to the source files?

The projects and the assets stay in your workspace library, tagged. That is the condition for the next piece to reuse characters, icons and transitions rather than starting from a blank page.

Can you do 2D and 3D?

Yes, and motion graphics too. The technique is chosen by what has to be told and by the budget, not by what the supplier knows how to do.

How do I start?

Open a free LITE workspace and upload whatever you already have animated, with its assets. Even a little of it is the beginning of the library that makes the following pieces cheaper.
